Musk-Ox, or MUSK-SHEEP (OVIBOS MOSCHATUS)

Arctic sheep of N. America; its remains are found in Europe as far s. as France. Its length is 8 ft., height 3 ft. The tail is short. The broad horns meet at their bases, and then bend down, outward, Musk-Ox. and upward. The pelage, colored dark amber, consists of lighter colored wool, very close in the back, and long hair on the sides. This is shed in summer. Its flesh has a musky smell, especially strong in old males during the rut. in August. Ten to twenty females herd with each male. A full-grown animal weighs 450 lbs. They are most abundant on the Mackenzie River. They feed on mo es, leaves, and underbrush, and are very nimble.
