[From L. præfectus.) (Fr. Pol.) A government functionary who super intends a department. He is the head of the executive, exercises most of the govern in ent patronage, including the appointment of a sous préfet for each arrondi ement, and in time of tumult may call out the military, or provisionally declare a state of siege.
