DEAN, b. 1837. American novelist; Consul at Venice 1861-65; ed. Atlantic Monthly, 1871–81. Venetian Life, 1866; Italian Journeys, 1867; Suburban Sketches, 1868. Their Wedding Journey, 1871, marked his pa age from descriptive writing to fiction. A Chance Acquaintance, 1873; A Fore gone Conclusion, 1874; Lady of the A roos took, 1878; Dr. Breen's Practice, 1883; Silas Lapham, 1885; April Hopes, 1887; A Haz ard of New Fortunes, 1889; An Altrurian, 1894. His light and charming style is equally marked in The Parlor Car and other farces.
