AUGUST US, b. at New York, Jan. 15, 1841. A Presbyterian theologian; pastor at Rochelle, N. J., 1870; prof. of Hebrew and the cognate languages in Union Theological Seminary, 1874. A statement he made in his addre , on being installed Prof. of Biblical Theology at the same seminary, to the effect that reason is a fountain of divine authority no le savingly enlightening than the Bible and the Church, subjected him to a trial for heresy before the General A embly of the Presbyterian Church, 1892. Wrote American Presbyterianism; Higher Criticism of the Hexateuch, 1893; The Me iah of the Gospels, 1894; The Me iah of the Apostles, 1895. Brine Shrimp. (Zool.) Artemia gracilis , the only animal, except a species of fly, which has been found in the waters of the Great Salt Lake. It is a crustacean of the order Phyllopod a , with stalked eyes, a slender and delicate body, and 11 pairs of broad, paddle-like or leaflike feet. Its length is about a quarter inch. Similar forms are found in brine vats in various parts of the world.
