In the early days of the city the place was a small, fortified island a few feet from the main-land; later it became a public hall for a emblies and concerts. Here Jenny Lind made her American début. Many years ago the island was incorporated with the general area of the Battery by filling the intervening space with earth and rock; new buildings were erected, and the place was devoted to the purpose of landing steerage immigrants. In 1890 it ceased to be used as an immigrant depot, and was turned oyer to the Park Commi ioners of the city of New York, and is now an aquarium.
