Electrolysis

In a certain cla of liquids, as acids, alkalies, and salts, either fused or di olved in water, transference of electricity takes place, not by simple conduction as in solid metals, but solely by atomic convection. This proce of transference is called electrolysis or electrolytic conduction, and the substances in solution whose constituent atoms or atomic groups act to carry the electric charges are called electrolytes.
