Ghee

(gē.) [Hind.) Butter made in India from the milk of cows and buffaloes, and clarified, after which it will remain sweet and good for some time. Although, to Europe ans, its smell and savor are rank and coarse, it forms an article of considerable commerce. Ghent, (guānt,) a famous old city of Belgium, C. of p. ofE. Flanders, at the junction of the Lys and Scheldt, 30 m. N.W. of Bru els. The city is built on 26 islands, separated from one another by canals, and connecting by some 300 wooden bridges, and the whole is surrounded by walls 8 m. in circumference. The ramparts and quays,fringed by trees, afford delightful promenades; the architecture of its buildings is quaint and antique. G. has an important transit-trade, with extensive Gibbons, manu fs. of cloths, silks, lace, sugar, chemicals, . G. dates from the 7th cent., and under the after rule of the Counts of Han over became one of the wealthiest, freest, and most powerful of European cities. Their burghers resisted by force of arms any aggre ion upon their rights and privileges, as evidenced in the insurrection ofArtevelde (q.v.), and in their long and determined struggle against Burgundy and Spain. From 1792 till 1814, G. became the C. of the French dept. Scheldt, and witne ed the signing of the peace between England and the U. States, in 1814. Pop. 119,848. [s. 406]
