[Fr. fémelle; Lat. femelia, dim. of femina, a woman.] One of the sex that conceives and brings forth young; as, "male and female of each living thing." Dryden. (Bot.) The plant without stamen, but bearing the pistil, which, upon impregnation with the pollen of the stamina ted flower, becomes productive.
