LAPIS LAZULI

A blue mineral found in ma es or nodult-s, consisting chiefly of silica and alumina, with about twenty per cent, of soda, and some peculiar combination of sulphur, to which it probably owes its colour; it is often sprinkled with yellow pyrites. It furnishes the valuable pigment known under the name of ultra marine, and was formerly much employed in ornamental inlaid work. Persia, China, and Ku ia are its chief sources. [s. 657]
