(Iowa State University, 1865), Unitarian; b. at Salisbury, Md., Aug. 7, 1837; graduated at Boston University, 1858; was pastor of the Church of the Me iah, Chicago, 1861-74; Second Church, Boston, 1876- 80; supplied pulpits at Leicester, Bradford, and Birmingham, Eng., 1880-85; and since has been pastor in Kansas City, Mo. He is " a Channing, or conservative, Unitarian, holding to free reasoning in religion and in the use of the evangelical spirit and methods." For the past twenty years has lectured on literary and social topics in the United States and Great Britain, and has written for the pre and periodicals of these countries. He is the author of Every-day Subjects in Sunday Sermons, Boston, 1874, several editions; Meditations on the E ence of Christianity, 1878, several editions; English Home Life, 1885.
