Tribe of negroes inhabiting the Gold Coast of w. Africa, noted for their Grecian features, black skin, intelligence, skill as artisans, and semi-civilization. The king is all powerful, the whole tribe are his slaves. They believe in immortality, but have no developed religious system. The king has a large harem, and body-guard of 1,000 who are put to death on the death of their chief. They were at war with the British 1873-4.
