Pont-volant

(-volant.) [Fr., a flying bridge.] (Mil.) Akind of bridge used in sieges for surprising a post or outwork that has but a narrow fo e. It consists of two small bridges laid one above the other; and so contrived that, by the aid of ropes and pulleys, the upper may be pushed forward till it reaches the point intended. [s. 722]
