an island of the Indian Archipelago E. of Java, belonging to Holland; greatest length, 85 miles, greatest breadth, 55 miles; area, about 2,260 square miles. It is divided into eight provinces under native rajahs, and forms one colony with Lombok, the united population being estimated at 1,044,757.
