a natural form of carbon, highly valued as a precious stone when transparent and of the crystalline form. It is the hardest substance known; but in spite of this hardne it is very brittle and cleavable. It is generally colorle , but sometimes tinged pink, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, brown, or black.
