Khanate of Turkestan, Central Asia; formerly Chorasmia, or Carasmia. An independent kingdom in the Middle Ages; subdued by Jenghiz Khan 1221, by Tamer lane 1370, and by the Uzbeks 1512, who defeated the Ru ians 1717 and 1839. It became a Ru ian dependency 1873. Area ab. 22.300 sq. m.; pop. ab. 650,000.
