Eldridge

Shaler W., an Ameriean abolitionist; born in West Springfield, Ma ., in 1817; removed to Kansas in 1855, and became proprietor of the American House in Kansas City. This hotel was soon recognized as the headquarters of Frees oilers. It was here that Governor Reeder was_concealed for three weeks in 1856. Later he became a member of the National Republican Committee and agent to gate immigration into Kansas. jnder the last authority he led a large number of settlers to Kansas. He was §nstrumental in giving much aid to the Free-State cause by smuggling large amounts of ammunition and provisions jnto Kansas Territory. —, the Civil War he served in the Union ¢. He died in Lawrence, Kan. an. 17, 1899.
