[Eng. gas, and Gr. skopeo to see.] An instrument for detecting the presence of carburetted hydrogen in the atmosphere. It is used, or should be, in coal-mines, to give an alarm when a dangerous and explosive condition of the air supervenes. It may also be applied to detect a leak in the gas-apparatus of a building.
