(par' -ah-). A prefix signifying beyond, beside, near, the opposite of, etc. In chemistry, it denotes close relationship, and is applied, e. g:,to a derivation of the benzol ring formed by the substitution of two atoms of hydrogen situated opposite each other. In biology, it indicates comparison with another object, although a distinct difference exists. In pathology, it signifies a condition varying from the normal, though resembling it somewhat.
