[ The solar photosphere is covered by a layer of glowing vapors and gases of very irregular depth. This va porous atmosphere is commonly called the chromosphere, sometimes sierra. entirely invisible to direct vision, whether with the telescope or naked eye, except for a few seconds about the beginning or end of a total eclipse, 988 but it may be seen on any clear day through the spectroscope.
