Capital of Lancaster co., Pa., on Conestoga Creek; founded 1730. It has manufactures chiefly of cotton and tobacco, and was the capital of Pa. 1799-1812. Here are Franklin and Marshall Coll. and a (German) Reformed theol. sem., founded 1824, with ab. 40 students. Pop., 1890, 32,011.
