Agent

(a'jent.) [From L. agens, doing.] In a general sense, anything which acts, or produces an effect.(Metaph.) A free or voluntary agent is one who may equally do anything, or its opposite, as acting not from any predetermination, but from choice.- (Law.) One who acts for and in the place of a principal. As long as he keeps within the scope of his authority, and declares that he is acting only as agent,he is not personally bound. [s. 13]
