[In Fr. bal is tique; Port. balistica.] The science of throwing mi ile weapons by means of an engine. ba-lis-ti-dæ, s . pl . [From the typical genus balistes (q.v.).] File-fishes. A family of fishes of the order Plectognath i. Their skin is rough or clothed with hard scales. They have a long muzzle, and few but distinct teeth. *bal-is-trär-i-a. s. [From balista (q.v.).] 1.
