ASHLEY, WILLIAM JAMES

(1860), Eng. economist; profe or at Toronto and Harvard Univ’s; prof. of Commerce in Birmingham Univ. since 1901; has ub. History of English Woolen Industry {i887), English Economic History and heory (1888-93), Adjustment of Wages ~ (1903), etc. (1881), an English writer and war correspondent, At the age of sixteen he accompanied.his father, Sir Ellis Ashmead-Bartlett, to Turkey, during the Greeco-Turkish War, and was taken pone by the Greeks. He distinguished imself as a war correspondent for London papers in the Boer War, in 1899, and in the Ru o-Japanese War, in 1904. He was also at the front in the two Balkan Wars, during 1912-13, and served as correspondent for over a year during the early part of the World War. He has written many books on_ his experiences and observations, one of the best being Some of My Experiences in the Great War (1918).
