Distinguished from a quarry, or open workings; complex of underground excavations, made in the extraction of metallic ores, coal, salt, or other minerals of value. The legal definition of the term differs in different countries. In some, regard is had entirely to the mode in which the mineral is obtained, and not to its chemical or geological character; in others, the use of the word is limited to operations, whether above or below ground, on deposits containing a valuable metal or ore.
