Alligator

(al-le-ga'tor.) [A N. American Ind. word.] (Zool.) An American genus of Reptiles, family Crocodilidæ, found from the Carol in as to Paraguay. Their feet are not webbed like ص خ م those of the true crocodiles. The A. Mi i ippi ens is, or lucius, of the Fig. 19. ALLIGATOR, Southern States, (A. Mi i ippi ens is.) sometimes grows to the length of 18 feet; it is protected by a dense covering of horny scales, impenetrable, in most parts, to a musket-ball. [s. 21]
