Grenville Mellen, an ‘American military officer; born in Danvers, Ma ., April 12, 1831; educated at Partridge’s Military Academy and Norwich University. He served during the Civil War with honor and Succeeded Rose crans as commander of the Department of Mi ouri. After the war he was chief engineer of the Union Pacific railroad and _ superintended its construction, and was a member of Congre from Iowa in 1867-1869. He _ succeeded General Sherman as president of the A ociation of the Army of the Tenne ee in 1894, and was also president of the New York Commandery of the Loyal Legion. In 1898 he was made chairman of the President’s Commi ion to inquire into the management of the War Department in the war with Spain.
