[ABSTAIN.] Lit. One who abstains. Used specially of a person who all but abstains from the use of intoxicating liquors, as contradistinguished from a total abstainer , ie., one who totally abstains both in health and in sickne . But even the latter term has lost much of its primitive force, and is now usually employed of a pledged teetotaller, whose vow forbids him to use intoxicating liquors as a beverage, but permits their use in sickne , under medical advice. was a prominent member of a Good Templar lodge, and was followed to his final resting place by a large number of the members of the body as well as of abstainers ."- Times , Dec. 11, 1875.
