Flagellants

(flaj'el-lantz.) [From L. flagellans, a scourging.] (Eccl. Hist.) A fanatical sect which arose in Italy abt. 1260. They maintained that remi ion of sins was not obtainable without flagellation. Accordingly, they marched in proce ion, preceded by priests carrying the crucifix, and publicly lashed themselves till the blood ran down their bodies. They were joined by many devotees-lay and cleric-and their pilgrimages extended throughout all the pro vs. of Central Germany, and even further. They were eventually rigorously suppre ed by a bull of Pope Clement VI.; although, so late as 1414, a revival of their practices obtained abrief hold in Germany. [s. 368]
