Ernest, b. Liverpool, Nov. 30, 1868; prominent critic and writer on music; studied at the univ. there; intended for civil service in India, but withdrew because of ill health and entered busine in native city; beginning 1903 he took music as his life work, teaching at Midland Inst., Birmingham. In 1905 he lived in Manchester as music critic of the Guardian; 1906, Birmingham Daily Post; 1919-20, of the Observer; after 1920 of the London Sunday Times of which his weekly column is a much-read feature; 1923 also on the ed. staff of the weekly Glasgow Herald; in 1924-25, he was guest critic of the New York Evening Post. We has been an aggre ive upholder of high ideals in interpretation and as a biographer has been no le unsparing in his moral and artistic judgments, esp. in his works on Wagner and Liszt. Author of “Gluck and the Opera,” “A Study of Wagner,” “Wagner,” “Musical Studies,” “Elgar,” “Richard Strau ,” “Wagner As Man and Artist,’ “A Musical Motley,’ “The Piano-Player and Its Music,” “A Music Critic’s Holiday,” “ Hugo Wolf,” “Stories of the Great Operas,” “The Unconscious Beethoven,” “Facts wd Fiction about Wagner,” “The Man Lisat,’ etc. He translated Weingartner’s work on conducting, Schweitzer’s biography of Bach, and Wagner’s music dramas for the Breitkopf and Hartel edition; dir. the collection of the series “The New Library of Music, 1912-14 ed.
