A statement of fact in a written instrument, or anything upon which inscriptions, characters, or signs have been recorded, and which is susceptible of use as evidence. A written instrument is regarded as of the highest authority upon the subject to which it relates; and, as a rule, cannot be varied or contradicted by parole testimony.
