(hins’-lik), Eduard, Prague, Sept. 11, 1825—-Baden near Vienna, Aug. 6, 1904; eminent critic and writer; Dr. Jur., 1849; studied piano under Tomaschek at Prague 1848-40; critic for the Wiener Zeitung; among his many books his first is most famous, “Vom MustkalischSchonen” (Leipzig, 1854); a somewhat bia ed, yet impre ive plea for absolute music as opposed to programme (v. D. D.) or fallaciously sentimental music; a bitter opponent of all Wagner i an ism and an ardent Brahmsite; 1855-64 mus. Pre e; then, Pre e; mus. hist. esthetics Vienna Univ.; 1861 prof. extraordinary, 1870 full prof.; 1895 retired.
