The Belgian forces retired fro the town (Aug. 19, 1914), when it w occupied by the Germans, who deli be ately set it on fire (Aug. 25). The fi lasted for a day and a half, and when died down this beautiful old un town, ‘the Oxford of Belgium,’ lay ruins. The town half was spared, b the univ., with its famous library, W destroyed. The library was rebu largely through contributions from t colleges and universities of the Unit States. Pop. 45,000.
