Cumæ

or CUMA, (ku'me.) (Anc. Geog.) The earliest of the Greek colonies founded in Italy, 1050B. c., in the Campagna, a little N. of Baise. It was in the acme of its prosperity between 700-450 B. c. The Samnites captured C. 420 B. c., and established a colony, which obtained the Roman franchise B. c. 338. Near it resided one of the sibyls. [s. 252]
