Long-boat

— Launch. The largest boat on board of a ship, usually having a square stern. It is employed for bringing out anchors and chain cables for a istance in floating a ve el, when aground; also for the transport of water and provisions, when a ship is anchored at some distance from the shore, and in case of shipwreck, or any calamity affecting the safety of the ve el, it is used to rescue some or all of the crew.
