SHERMAN, THOMAS WEST

(1813Civil War general; 0. Newport, R.I. 79), fought under General Zachary Taylor He at the battle of Buena Vista in_the Mexican War, and in the Civil War commands as prigadier-general at held Port Hudson, where he lost Port Royal, at Forts Jackson and St. a leg, and ate enna ennn EEE gIEnEEEEnR EE SEEEEEEEEREEEEREEnERnEnEnn aS Philip, New Orleans. In 1870 he retired with the full rank of major-general. (1820-91), an American general, b. at Lancaster, Ohio, and educated there and at West Point. He served in Florida against the Seminole Indians, and in the war with Mexico, 1846-48. but resigned from the army in 1853 to conduct a banking busine at San Francisco. He joined the N. on the outbreak of tha Civil War, and after taking part in the battles of Bull Run 1861 and Shiloh 1862 was in 1863 made heaa of the army of the Tenne ee, and in 1864 commander of the military division of the Mi i ippi. He took Atlanta on Sept. 1, 1864, and later in the same year abandoned his base and marched 300 m. acro Georgia to the sea. in 1865 he again abandoned his base and marched to Richmond, defeating Johnston and co-operating with Grant. Johnston surrendered to S. in ao 1865, thus bringing the war to an end.
