Philip Dan forth, an American philanthropist, born in Stock bridge, N. Y., May 16, 1832; received a common school education; was a miner in California in 1852- 1856; in the commi ion busine in Milwaukee in 1856-1863; and later | became the head of a large meat-pack- Ja Os ing concern in Chicago. He founded the Armour Mi ion and the Armour Institute cf Technology, both in Chicago; the former at a cost of about $250,000, and the latter with an endowment of $1,500,000, subsequently increased. He died Jan. 6, 1901.
