Hale, NATHAN

1755-1776. Patriot of the Revolution, Captain of Conn. troops 1775. He undertook to find out the strength of the British forces in and about New York, but was captured while returning and hanged as a spy by order of Gen. Howe. His heroic death made him a national hero. Statues of him were erected at Hartford 1887 and in New York 1893.His nephew, NATHAN. LL.D., 1784-1863, father of Edward E., ed. Boston Advertiser from 1814.
