FREEHOLD

in law, an estate in real property, held either in fee-simple or fee-tail, in which case it is a free bold of inheritance, or for the term of the owner’s life; also, the tenure by which such an estate is held. Freehold is to be distinguished from copyhold and leasehold (q.v.).
