dingdong (dingdong)

[A reduplication of ding2, in imitation of the sound of a bell. Cf. equiv. Sw. dingdang, dingelidang = Dan. ding dang.] 1. The sound of a bell, or any similar sound of repeated strokes.-2. A device in which two bells of different tone are struck alternately, used in striking the quarter-hours on a clock. - To go at or to it ding-dong, to fight in good earnest.
