APOTHECIUM

It may be either external or occupy the interior of cavities (perithecia) in the lichen, and is always developed from the hyphæ of the thallus. It consists , spore cases, or aoci; par, the filaments, or paraphyses, accompanying them; el, cortlcal layer; g, gonidia. of asci, or club-shaped vertical sacs filled with spores, and_parahyses, or filamentous vertical branches of the hyphæ.
