Brown, John

an officer in the American army during the Revolution, was B. in Berks hire co., Ma ., in 1744, graduated at Yale College in 1771, and commenced the practice of law at Caughnawaga, New York, where he was appointed king's attorney. But he soon returned to Pittsfield, in his native State, and took an active share in the patriotic movements at the opening of the Revolution. In May, 1775, he served under Allen and Arnold in their succe ful expedition against Ticonderoga and Crown Point, and was sent as special me enger to the Congre at Philadelphia with the news of their succe . When Ethan Allen, in Sept. of the same year. made his attempt to surprise Montreal, B. co-operated with him, but was fortunate enough to escape, while his leader was captured. The next Dec., Major B. joined Arnold and Montgomery before Quebec. While leading a party of men up the Mohawk to the relief of Gen.
