Castle

(kas'l.) [L. castellum, dim. of castrum, & camp.] (Fort.) A fortre or building rendered defensible either by nature or art. Formerly, a complete C. consisted of a ditch or moat; an outwork, called a barbican, which guarded the gate and drawbridge; an artificial mount; an outer and inner ballium or enclosure; and the keep, or lofty tower, in which the owner or governor resided, and under which were the dungeons, or donjons.
