Shirooan

An unidentified city of China, described thus by the Co acks mentioned in the Preface of Moscovia: “From Shirokalga to a Citie of Catay called Shirooan is a dayes journey: this Citie is built of stone high walled, and large in compa e, it is a dayes travell, it hath twelve Towres; whereupon, as also on the Citie Gates is planted Ordnance and small shot great store, with a continuall Watch or Guard, night and day; at the first comming are five Gates well furnished with Ordnance and War-like Munition; and from one gate to the other through the Citie is halfe a dayes going. For Victuals and Merchandizes, here is more then in the Cities mentioned, all their shops very full, and the Citie so populous that one can hardly pa e the streets for the throng of people. The Amba adors Houses are also faire built of stone, their Wals covered with Bra e, so that this Citie is adorned more with precious things then the former mentioned and much more populous.” {Pilgrimes 3. 801.)... 281
