Cohort

[Lat. cohors, cohort is; anciently, chors; allied to Gr. chortos, an inclosed place; Fr. cohorte. (Rom. Antiq.) A company of soldiers numbering about 500 men, or the tenth part of a legion. The Prætori an C. was a body of picked troops who attended the general, and is said to have been first instituted by Scipio Africa Dus. -A body of warriors. (Used poetically.)
