SWEET FLAG

a plant of the reed type growing in swamps and on river banks in the Northern States and some parts of Europe. Its root, which has a strong aromatic smell and a biting taste, is in some sections converted into a home-made confection by can dying in slices. It is also employed in medicinal preparations, in the making of toilet vinegars, by rectifiers, etc., and for scenting snuff. [s. 619]
