Chaining

Proce es of measuring a line with a surveyor's chain. A pin is placed to mark the end of the chain while it is moved on to the next position. As horizontal distances are always required, the chain should be held nearly level. The precision of chaining is low, the uncertainty in the length of a line being usually greater than one one thousandth part. Surveyor's Chain.
