The forms, dimensions, and uses of boats are very various. The boats belonging to a ship of war are the launch, barge, pinnace, yawl, cutters, jollyboat, and gig. Those belonging to a merchant ve el are the launch, skiff, jolly-boat or yawl, stern boat, quarter-boat, and captain’s gig. Every British pa enger ship must have a launch afid properly fitted life-boat.
