Sir Thomas ( 3 son of Wm. Bouch, captain in merchant service ). b. Thursby, Cumber land 22 Feb. 1822; manager and engineer of Edinburgh and Northern railway 1849; made floating railways for goods trains over rivers Forth and Tay; constructed a number of remarkable bridges chiefly railway, in all of which he made use of the lattice girder; designed railway bridge over river Tay, completed 22 Sep. 1877, opened 31 May 1878, the central portion of this bridge fell into the river carrying with it an entire train and its load of about 70 pa engers 28 Dec. 1879; designed railway bridge over river Forth begun 30 Sep. 1878, work was stopped after above accident; A.I.C.E. 3 Dec. 1850, M.I.C.E. 11 May 1858; presented with freedom of Dundee 31 May 1878; knighted at Windsor Castle 26 June 1879. d.
