Tympanum

(tim'pah-nüm.) [Same der iv.] (Anat.) See EAR.-(Arch.) The triangular space in a pediment enclosed by the cornice of its inclined sides, and the horizontal fillet of the corona; it is often decorated with sculpture. [s. 915]
