Name of pious women of N. T.; viz., the mothers of Jesus, James the Le , and Mark; the sister of Lazarus and Martha; MAGDALEN (q.v.). Mary I., 1516-1558. Queen of England 1553; daughter of Henry VIII. and Catherine of Aragon; married to Philip II. of Spain 1554; fierce persecutor of Protestants. Cranmer, Latimer, Ridley, and some 300 others were burned during her brief reign; contributing powerfully to the advancement of the cause for which they suffered. Mary II., 1662-1694. Queen of England 1689; daughter of James II. Her marriage, 1677, to William of Orange brought him to the throne, which she shared.
